Le Due Sorelle
Francesca and Margherita’s first encounter with Fonterenza was during the 1976 harvest. Margherita and Francesca, twin sisters, were taken to the farmhouse by their parents in the first months of October of that year.In those days vineyards were part of a tightly knit landscape, alternating with ancient olive groves and the thick Mediterranean bush or “macchia”. Small landowners and farmers joined forces to pick grapes at each different farmhouses. This encounter with an archaic world was the beginning of the two girls’ attachment to this area. The sisters’ favourite childhood games were picking pomegranates, hunting wild mushrooms and collecting wild asparagus, or walking up to S.Angelo through the woods.
The first to choose to come and live in the countryside and work on the land was Margherita. She started with the olive trees, learning from the local experts how best to take care of the trees from pruning onwards. Two years later she was joined by her sister, Francesca.
Their passion for wine started when they planted the first vineyards themselves. Their love grew along with the attention for the plants, as they took care of the vineyards in person, vinestock by vinestock, learning the recognise the personality of the Sangiovese clone, talking with big and small producers about growth systems, microclimate, traditions, consumers and the future.
